Hungry for Change

Recently I watched this food documentary called Hungry for Change and it really made me think about what I'm putting into my body. The documentary is about how we are what we eat and I learned many interesting facts. For example:
  • One third of all women and one quarter of all men are always on a diet in the US. However diets don't work, they only cause temporary weight loss.
  • Did you know that drinking Diet Cola makes you gain more weight even though it supposedly contains zero calories and sugar free? It contains a deadly combination of Caffeine and Aspartame (artificial sweetener) which kills your brain cells. (Read more) Aspartame makes you crave for more carbohydrates and it causes multiple sclerosis, diabetes and other neurological problems. In fact, its drinking diet cola is worse than drinking your normal cola (which causes obesity and diabetes). Many people are addicted because just before your brain cells die, they give off a buzz which makes you feel good o.O
  • Junk food is actually more addictive than smoking, food companies create chemicals to make you addicted to their products because they taste so good
  • MSG and free glutamates cause obesity, search for MSG induced mice (check out this pic of this horrendously fat mouse!!)

  • Sugar is the cocaine in the food world.  It makes people fat (yes not fat itself!) The average American eats 22 teaspoons of sugar a day. Bread, cereals, rice, milk and a lot of other processed food that turn into sugar the moment they enter our blood stream.
  • People living in the modern world are overfed but actually starving nutritionally. We keep eating but never feel full because we are ingesting lots of calories but not enough nutrition.
  • Working in office + Junk food + No Exercise = Obesity
  • Juicing is the best way to get your body all the nutrients it needs.  You can do a vegetable/fruit juice blend (60% veggies and 40% fruits) and include food items like Kale, Spinach, Coriander, Parsley, Celery, Apples, Pears, Ginger, Lemon etc.
  • Try to eat food items that are as close to their original form as possible (i.e. the less processed the better!) Look for milk that is locally produced with little processing, eat whole leafy vegetables, fruits, unpolished rice, organic cereals etc.
After watching the documentary, I am inspired to cut down on the sugars I am putting into my body everyday.  I went to the AMK Hub NTUC supermarket on Sunday with Cindy and bought lots of veggies to make the veggie juice drink. It tasted abit yucky but oh well, i did feel better and went to the toilet a couple of times after drinking it lol. Not sure if its psychologically since its only my first time drinking it but i'll try to drink the veggie juices once in a while to detox my body!
