Taiwan Trip Jan 2011 - Part II (Wu Lai, Taipei)

Day 2:

The driver who picked us up from the airport had offered his services to bring us out and the price he quoted for half day was pretty reasonable so we decided to engage his services. We wanted to take a short half day trip to outside of Taipei city, we asked around and decided to take a trip to Wulai which is like an aboriginal place where they have some waterfall and tribal stuff.

We had some time in the morning before the driver arrived so went to walk around Ximending first.

my fav milk tea shop at ximending, went there almost every day to buy hot milk tea.

btw I came to Taipei thinking i'm going to buy bubble milk tea every day, turned out everyday i bought hot milk tea cuz it was freezing cold during the whole trip! And i tell u, hot milk tea is freakingly delicious when the weather is so cold and when you take a sip, its like heaven ahhh.

Famous Ah Zhong mian xian. Didnt try it though cuz i didnt really like the da zhang mian xian after trying it the night before at Shida night market, scared of the smell of the da zhang haha.

Tried some dumplings which my bro tried and said it was very very good. And true enough, it was very very good haha.

Wulai 烏來

Wikipedia: Wulai District is a rural district in southern New Taipei City in northern Republic of China (Taiwan). It sits near the border with Taipei and is famous for its hot springs. The name of the town derives from the Atayal phrase qilux ulay meaning "hot and poisonous"

When we reached Wulai, we saw the cascading waterfall with the pretty autumn leaves. It was so scenic that i took more than 20 pics of it haha.

Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall - 国立中正纪念堂

This is a famous monument erected in memory of Chiang Kai-shek, former President of the Republic of China

A large bronze statue of Chiang Kai-shek dominates the main hall. The figure is shown smiling, seated and wearing traditional Chinese dress. Inscribed on the wall above and behind the seated figure are the Chinese characters for Ethics, Democracy, and Science. Inscriptions on the side walls read The purpose of life is to improve the general life of humanity and The meaning of life is to create and sustain subsequent lives in the universe.

Taipei 101

Went to the Taipei 101 Observatory, its supposed to be the most famous (and tallest) building in Taipei. It wasnt easy to get there though, we took the Taipei Metro to Taipei City Hall station and then took the shuttle bus to Taipei 101.

Mum didnt wanna go with us cuz she said there the stuff at Taipei 101 was very high end so she wanted to walk around the hotel area in Ximending. We were kinda worried but in the end decided she would be ok cuz its not very dangerous in general in Taipei lol.

The view from the top floor observatory, not very clear though cuz it was kinda foggy after a while..

Tuned Mass Damper

Suspended from the 92nd to the 88th floor, the pendulum sways to offset movements in the building caused by strong gusts. Its sphere, the largest damper sphere in the world, consists of 41 circular steel plates, each with a height of 125 mm (4.92 in) being welded together to form a 5.5 m (18 ft) diameter sphere.

Some futuristic stuff on the floor, dont really know what it is though. it just keeps changing images lol.

My bro loves to pose hahaha

My attempt *ahem*

There was a coral exhibition area near to the observatory and saw these items carved from coral.

owl , this is quite cool

dragon - mythical creature in chinese history

pandas, so cute!

Ok lah, the Taipei 101 building was ok only..nothing much to see and frankly not worth the price cuz the tickets are not very cheap haha..after that we headed back to Ximending for the night.

we were hungry so decided to have KFC for dinner.

we were finishing our KFC dinner when we spied my mum downstairs, so i went down to find her haha. She was looking at some street stall selling fruits. She didnt buy much stuff, actually she was quite cute lah..think she was content with just looking around and seeing all the stuff in Ximending.

Passed by this 4D movie theatre at Ximending, i read from this girl's blog not worth the $ at all so didnt even think of trying.

Oh yes, did i mention that I LOVE Taiwanese street food snacks??!!

During our stay in Taipei, almost every night we look forward to buying all the street food back to the hotel to eat keke

These small street stalls line the small roads inside the Ximending area, but quite funny..everytime some police patrol the area, there will be someone watching out and they will yell then suddenly all the hawkers will run away pushing their carts hurriedly.

fried mushrooms and hot dog

We were buying some grilled mushrooms when suddenly the police came and the hawker ran away with our food..then we were like oh no! then luckily somebody told us to stay there cuz they'll come back, and true enough less than 2 mins later, the hawker came back with our food after the police left and handed us our grilled mushrooms ^0^.

Grilled corn

Jie and momo posing for the camera with their golden grilled corn cobs. Its so tasty i tell u, they spread some yummy sauce over the grilled corn and when you take a bite, its like wowwww.
