Shiseido makeup workshop

Signed up for this Shiseido makeup workshop which was organized by my company today.  Learned quite a few useful makeup tips from the Shiseido trainer!

Basic makeup consists of the following:

1. Base
2. Eyes
3. Lips

You should emphasize on one of the three areas depending on which features you want to highlight. For example, if you have good skin, you can choose to emphasize on your base makeup. If people usually compliment you that you have nice large eyes, then of course you can choose to concentrate on your eyes. If you have "kissable" lips (haha), then you should play up your lip makeup.

1. Base
Foundation and concealer

Concealer is used mainly to conceal dark eyecircles and any blemishes on your face.  I always thought that you should apply concealer first followed by foundation but the trainer told us actually this depends on the type of concealer you are using. If the concealer is quite light and liquid smooth kind (like the one i am using from Ettusais), you should apply the foundation first putting on the concealer. This is because you will wipe away the concealer when you apply the foundation. However if your concealer is thicker or cream based, then you can apply it first.

For foundation, you should apply it on your cheek area first. Blend it outwards from your cheeks towards your hairline/ears. After that you can apply it lightly on your forehead and nose from upwards towards your hairline. Must remember to blend the foundation near the hairline if not it looks like you are wearing a mask.  Lastly, remember to apply a little bit of foundation near your jaw and blend so that your neck and face will not have a separate colour. The trick is to let your makeup become your 2nd layer of skin so it should look as natural as possible.

Blusher - Draw an imaginary line extending form the tip of your nose towards the outer corner of your eyebrows. The blusher should not be higher than this line.

Draw another imaginary line from the outer corner of your lips towards your ear lobe. The blusher should not be below this line if not you will look like your cheeks are sagging or you have jowls (heaven forbid!!).

Lastly, take an imaginary line from your inner eyebrow extending downwards towards the side of the nose. Your blusher should not extend beyond this line.

It should look something like the below:

2. Eyes
Eyebrows should start from the inner corner of your eyes and taper off like in the eye makeup diagram below (i found this diagram online which is like the one the trainer showed us). The arch should be near to your iris.

For the eyeshadow, you can just do it like a half semi-circle at your eye socket area. Put more at the base near the eyelashes and blend upwards towards your eyebrows so it becomes lighter.  I usually put white eyeshadow at the inner corner of my eyes to make it look brighter and also at the area near the arch to highlight the brow bone.

Eyeliner - You can skip this if your double eyelid crease is hidden when you open up your eyes.

Mascara - Curl your eyelashes at 3 different parts 1) near the roots first 2) center and 3) tips. This will make your lashes fan out and curl upwards. If your lashes usually droop by mid day due to the weight of the masara, you might want to apply a lash base (white or greyish colour) which will make the mascara stick to your lashes. When applying the mascara, do it in a zig zag motion before you brush it upwards.

The trainer said try not to do eyelash perm as your eyelashes may stick out in different directions and look clumpy. Oops no more eyelash perm for me next time lol.

3. Lips

Apply the center of your top lips first near the cupid bow and towards the outer corners of your lips. Make sure you blend both top and bottom outer corners so you have colour at the edges if not your lips will look like two separate lips moving!

Important: Do not purse your lips! The trainer said alot of women do that, they apply lipstick on the bottom and then smack their lips together but actually this is not good. This is because your lipstick usually comes with moisurizer and when you apply it, it forms a veil across your lips. If you purse your lips, you are breaking the veil and your lipstick will not last long, causing your lips to become dehydrated faster during the say.

We were given this Maquillage Rouge Enamel lipstick sample which looks quite cool because it comes with both the lip colour and lip gloss, will definitely try it!

Colours for makeup

Cool colours:
  • Pink
  • Blue
  • Rose
  • Violet
  • Purple
  • Silver

Warm colours:
  • Green
  • Yellow
  • Orange
  • Brown
  • Gold
  • Beige
Individual colours
  • Black
  • White
  • Grey
  • Red
You should choose colours to match your outfit, but you dont have to choose the exact same shade. As long as they are from the same colour family its fine.

For example if you are wearing a pink dress you can apply light violet eyeshadow, rose blusher and pinkish lipstick. On days you are feeling lazy or late and dont have time to think about matching colours, you can choose a black or white dress because the individual colors can match with either the cool or warm colours! No wonder most of my outfits in my wardrobe are either black, white or grey ..cuz im alway late and rushing for time lol.
